Dear Parishioners,

With the solemn celebration of Pentecost last week, we concluded the Easter season. I hope and pray that the days of Easter were filled with moments of grace and peace as we celebrated our Lord’s triumphant victory over sin and death with his resurrection. I thank all of those who made our Easter celebrations so beautiful and prayerful. We now return to the Ordinary Time of the liturgical year. This week though we celebrate one of two beautiful solemnities following Pentecost, the Most Holy Trinity. As Catholics we believe that God is present: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. When we invoke the Blessed Trinity, we are truly invoking the presence of God. All prayer begins with signing ourselves in the name of the Trinity. Although a deeply theological phenomenon, the Trinity is very much the fabric of our faith as Roman Catholics. May our prayer always be rooted in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Father Tobechukwu Offiah

This coming Saturday, June 1, Tobe, our former pastoral year seminarian, will be ordained to the priesthood for the Diocese of Brooklyn. The ordination will take place at the Co-Cathedral of St. Joseph beginning at 11:00AM. All are invited to attend. If you cannot attend the ordination, the Mass will be televised live on NET-TV. On Father’s Day, Sunday, June 16, Father Tobe will celebrate a Mass of Thanksgiving at the 10:15AM Mass at Our Lady of Victory Church. After Mass Father Tobe will bestow individual first priestly blessings. Tradition holds that if you receive the blessing of a new priest, you are granted a plenary indulgence (following the norms). Please keep Tobe and his classmates in your prayers.

Father’s Day Remembrance

As we prepare to enter the month of June, we remember in a special way all fathers both living and deceased. Father’s Day remembrance envelopes are located at the doors of each of the three churches. You may place the names of your father on the envelope along with the offering. The names of all fathers will be placed on the altars of each of the three churches throughout the month of June.

Annual Catholic Appeal

I thank all of you for your generous contribution to this year’s Annual Catholic Appeal. As you know, this appeal supports the works of the Diocese of Brooklyn such as Catholic Charities, Migration Services, Vocations, the aid of our Senior Priests and much more. Each parish is assigned a goal to raise within the year. Our goal here at St. Martin de Porres is $63,586. The key to a successful campaign is full participation. If you have not made a pledge to this year’s appeal, I ask that you consider making one. I thank all of you for the gift of your time, talent and treasure.

Memorial Day Weekend

This Monday is Memorial Day. The parish office will be closed. Only one Mass will be celebrated at 8:00AM at Our Lady of Victory. There will not be a 12:00Noon Mass at St. Peter Claver.

Wishing you a joyful and peaceful week,
Father Alonzo Cox
