Dear Parishioners,

Today is the seventh and last Sunday of Easter. We will formally conclude the Easter season with the Solemnity of Pentecost next Sunday. Over these last weeks of Easter, we have heard from the Acts of the Apostles, particularly how they were able to bring others to Christ. As disciples of the risen Lord, we are called to bring others to Christ by the example of our lives. It is my hope that this Easter season was one of renewal as we continue the journey of walking with the Lord. Our gospel today is the priestly prayer of Jesus. Our Lord says this prayer before he takes his seat at the right hand of the Father. He prays for us, his children, that we may be consecrated in truth. As we prepare for the coming of the Holy Spirit next Sunday at Pentecost, we pray for a deeper sense of truth, that the Lord will bless us in his abundant love and mercy.

Mother’s Day

Today is Mother’s Day. On behalf of the entire parish community, I take this opportunity to wish all our mothers, grandmothers, godmothers, stepmothers and mothers to be, a very happy and blessed Mother’s Day. The month of May is traditionally dedicated to our Blessed Mother Mary. We pray that Mary will always be the example of all mothers here on earth. A special blessing will be imparted to all mothers at the masses this weekend.

Annual Catholic Appeal

I thank all of you for your generous contribution to this year’s Annual Catholic Appeal. As you know, this appeal supports the works of the Diocese of Brooklyn such as Catholic Charities, Migration Services, Vocations, the aid of our Senior Priests and much more. Each parish is assigned a goal to raise within the year. Our goal here at St. Martin de Porres is $63,586. The key to a successful campaign is full participation. If every parishioner participates in this year’s appeal, we will most definitely make our goal and maybe go above it. Any monies raised beyond the goal comes directly back to the parish. If you have not made a pledge to this year’s appeal, I ask that you consider making one. I thank all of you for the gift of your time, talent and treasure.

Congratulations to our First Communion Children

Today the third graders from our Faith Formation program will receive their First Holy Communion. We congratulate them and their families who will gather today in thanksgiving to God for the gift of faith and the gift of Jesus in the Most Blessed Sacrament. Let us continue to keep them in our prayers.

Mother’s Day Remembrance

As we enter the month of May, we will remember in a special way at Mass all mothers, both living and deceased. Mother’s Day remembrance envelopes are located at the doors of each of our three churches. Please fill out the envelope and place the offering inside. You may return the envelope in the collection basket or to the parish office. The names of all mothers will be placed on the altars of each of the three churches throughout the entire month of May.

Wishing you a blessed and joyful week,
Father Alonzo Q. Cox
