From The Pastors Desk
Today is the 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time. As you can see all of the Christmas decorations, trees and poinsettia plants are gone. In just a few short weeks, we will begin the season of Lent with Ash Wednesday. Our gospel passage for Mass today is one of my favorites. It is the call of Simon and Andrew. As these fishermen were tending to their work, their eyes gaze upon Jesus. It is from this initial gaze, Jesus invites them with these words, “come after me and I will make you fishers of men”. It is from that invitation, both Simon and Andrew drop and leave everything behind to follow the Lord Jesus. Jesus invites us to follow him. He calls us every day to be faithful, strong and holy witnesses of him. The question that arises is, are we ready to drop everything and follow the Lord Jesus? Knowing and trusting that the Lord provides for all our needs, are we ready to live that out by following and listening to the voice of the Lord. In a special way, we pray for vocations to the priesthood and religious life, that more young men and women will have the courage to say yes to the Lord Jesus. Let us pray today, that the Lord of the harvest will continue to call laborers in the vineyard.
Annual Catholic Appeal
A sincere thank you to all who contributed to the 2023 Diocese of Brooklyn Annual Catholic Appeal. As you know each parish was given a financial goal to raise during the year. Our goal here at St. Martin de Porres was $63,586. I am very happy to announce that we have made our goal and gone above it! All monies that go above the goal are returned to the parish. Words cannot begin to express how grateful I am to all of you who made this a reality for us here at St. Marin de Porres. In just a few weeks, we will begin the process of outlining our 2024 Annual Catholic Appeal. May God continue to bless you for your prayers and generosity.
Parish Census Update
We are asking all parishioners to help update their contact information in our database. All parishioners are asked to fill out the contact forms that are located at the doors of each of the three churches. You may drop the forms in the collection basket or bring them to the parish office.
Parish Women’s Day Celebration Raffle
During the month of March, we celebrate Women’s History Month. As has been the custom here at St. Martin de Porres, we will have a special celebration for Women’s History Month on Sunday, March 17. In preparing for this celebration, raffle tickets are now on sale. Raffle tickets are $5.00 each and can be purchased from any of the women’s day committee members.
Wishing you a blessed and peaceful week,
Father Alonzo Q. Cox
