From The Pastors Desk
Today we celebrate the 3rd Sunday of Advent, which this year happens to be the last full calendar week of the Advent season. As you might have noticed on our Advent wreath in the sanctuary, today we light the rose-colored candle. Traditionally, the 3rd Sunday of Advent is known as “Gaudete” Sunday. The word Gaudete is Latin meaning rejoice. We rejoice that in just a few short days, the Savior of the world will be born. We rejoice that the king of kings will make his dwelling among us. Our scripture readings for Mass talk to us about the spirit of the Lord. We hear from the prophet Isaiah that the spirit of the Lord is upon us and that he has anointed us. As we prepare to celebrate the birth of Christ, we pray the words of the Magnificat, my soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my savior.
Christmas Mass Schedule
You have noticed that there are banners outside each of the three churches highlighting the Mass schedule for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Next Sunday, December 24, we will have a regular Sunday Mass schedule for the 4th Sunday of Advent. Our Christmas Eve Masses will begin at 5:00PM with a Family Mass at St. Peter Claver Church, which will include the Christmas pageant with our parish youth children. At 11:00PM Christmas Carols will be sung by our parish choir which will take place at Our Lady of Victory Church to be followed by Solemn Midnight Mass at 12:00AM. On Christmas Day, Masses will be celebrated at each of the three churches, 9:00AM at Holy Rosary, 10:00AM at Our Lady of Victory and 11:30AM at St. Peter Claver. On Sunday, December 31st we will have Eucharistic Adoration with the recitation of Night Prayer to begin at 11:00PM at Our Lady of Victory. Following Holy Hour, Mass will be celebrated at Midnight. We are happy this year to welcome the Bishop of Brooklyn, His Excellency Bishop Robert Brennan as the Main Celebrant and Homilist. All are welcomed to join us in prayer over these next few days.
Advent Vespers and Eucharistic Adoration
As is the custom here at St. Martin de Porres, we will have Eucharistic Adoration with Vespers each Tuesday during Advent continuing this Tuesday, December 19th. Vespers will take place at Our Lady of Victory Church starting at 7:30PM. The service will be livestreamed, but all are welcomed to join us for prayer.
Tomorrow, Monday, December 18th is Reconciliation Monday. There will be a priest available for the sacrament of confession in every Catholic church in the Diocese of Brooklyn and the Archdiocese of New York. Here at St. Martin de Porres, there will be a priest available for confession after each of the masses on Monday. In addition, confessions will be heard at Our Lady of Victory Church beginning at 7:00PM. What a wonderful way to prepare for Christmas as we celebrate the sacrament of confession.
Wishing you a blessed and joyful Gaudete Sunday and week,
Father Alonzo Q. Cox
