Dear Parishioners,

It’s hard to believe that today is October 1st! As many of you know, Fall is my favorite time of the year. As a kid growing up, I loved the drives upstate to see the changing of the leaves and to go apple picking with my friends. The weather is absolutely perfect for me! As you know, I am an avid runner and weather like this is great for runners. Soon the smell of fireplaces will resonate, which is amazing. On the liturgical calendar, October 1 is the feast of St. Therese of Lisieux, popularly known as the Little Flower. Because October 1 is a Sunday this year, her liturgical feast day gets bumped (Sundays always supersedes memorials and feasts days). I would though invite you to say a special prayer through her powerful intercession for the peaceful repose of the soul of our former pastor, Msgr. Paul Jervis. As you know, the founding pastor of St. Peter Claver Church, Servant of God, Msgr. Bernard Quinn, had a tremendous devotion to the Little Flower. You will notice quotes from her inscribed on the beams inside the church. In turn, Msgr. Jervis had a great devotion to the Little Flower. Msgr. was buried with the novena of St. Therese in his hands. We pray that the Lord will continue to bestow his love upon all of us here at St. Martin de Porres.

Diocese of Brooklyn Eucharistic Revival

The Catholic Church throughout the country has called for a renewal in the proclamation of the Most Holy Eucharist. As Catholics, we believe that Jesus is present body, blood, soul and divinity in the Eucharist. He is truly the center of the Church. Here in the Diocese of Brooklyn, we will have a Diocesan Eucharistic Revival which will take place this Saturday, October 7 at Maimonides Park Stadium (Brooklyn Cyclones in Coney Island) beginning at 8:00AM. The day will include praise and worship, Mass, Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, Family Catechesis and much more. There will be a bus leaving from Our Lady of Victory Church for $20.00. The bus will leave promptly at 7:00AM. We will also be selling tee shirts with our parish logo, as we represent St. Martin de Porres at the park. Tee shirts are $20.00 each. To reserve a ticket and reserve a seat on the bus, please call the parish office.

Mass in Honor of Our Lady of the Rosary

On the liturgical calendar, October 7 is the memorial of Our Lady of the Rosary. How blessed we are as Catholics to have this beautiful devotion dedicated to Our Lady, who continues to lead us to her Son, Jesus. Next Sunday, October 8, we will commemorate the memorial of Our Lady of the Rosary at the 9:00AM Mass at Holy Rosary Church. Following the Mass, there will be a light reception in the lower hall. All are invited to celebrate this beautiful memorial at Holy Rosary Church.

Wishing you a joyful and peaceful week,

Father Alonzo Q.
