From the Pastor’s Desk
Dear Parishioners,
Today is the 5th Sunday of Easter. These weeks of Easter seem to be flying right by! The risen Lord continues to reveal himself to us, as our eyes remain fixated on him. Our scripture passages for Mass over these next few days will prepare us for the upcoming solemnity of the Ascension of our Lord. Jesus speaks to us of his relationship with the Father. Our gospel passage at Mass today depicts our Father’s house. The Lord has gone to prepare a place for us where we will spend all eternity. Jesus tells us that, I am the way, the truth and the life. As Jesus prepares to ascend to the Father, he prepares us to wait in joyful anticipation for his second coming. May we continue to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ here in Bedford Stuyvesant.
Annual Catholic Appeal
I thank all of you for your generous contribution to this year’s Annual Catholic Appeal. As you know, this appeal supports the works of the Diocese of Brooklyn such as Catholic Charities, Migration Services, Vocations, the aid of our Senior Priests and much more. Each parish is assigned a goal to raise within the year. Our goal here at St. Martin de Porres is $63,586. The key to a successful campaign is full participation. If every parishioner participates in this year’s appeal, we will most definitely make our goal and maybe go above it. Any monies raised beyond the goal comes directly back to the parish. If you have not made a pledge to this year’s appeal, I ask that you consider making one. I thank all of you for the gift of your time, talent and treasure.
Diocese of Brooklyn Vicariate of Black Catholic Concerns Gala Dinner Dance
This year the Diocese of Brooklyn Vicariate for Black Catholic Concerns will sponsor a fundraiser Gala Dinner dance. It will take place on Saturday May 20th at Gargiulo’s restaurant in Coney Island. We will honor Msgr. Paul Jervis, current pastor of St. Francis of Assisi-St. Blaise Parish commemorating his 40th Anniversary of Priesthood Ordination. Tickets are $175 per person. For more information, please call the Vicariate Office.
Mother’s Day Remembrance
During the month of May, we will remember in a special way all Mother’s both living and deceased. Mother’s Day remembrance envelopes are located at the doors of each of the three churches. You are invited to place the names of the mothers you wish to have remembered along with the offering in the envelopes. These names will be placed on the altars of each of the three churches during the month of May.
League of the Sacred heart Tea/Brunch Party
I take this opportunity to thank the members of the St. Peter Claver League of the Sacred Heart for their hard work in making last week’s tea/brunch party a great success. We as a parish community are grateful for the work they do most especially in promoting the devotion of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus.
Wishing you a joyful and blessed week,
Father Alonzo Q. Cox
